Weathering the Storm Why a Keder Greenhouse Is Built to Last

On the 4th of August, Scotland - and much of the UK - was battered by Storm Floris, an unseasonably powerful summer storm that caught many off guard. With wind speeds exceeding 80mph in several areas - and gusts reaching an incredible 122mph on the Cairngorms summit - it’s clear that the climate is shifting. Storms like Floris, once rare for summer, are becoming more frequent and ferocious.
For many, the damage has been widespread - fallen trees, blocked roads, cancelled travel, and over 70,000 homes losing power. Gardens have been torn apart. Structures flattened. Holidaymakers on the Isle of Skye even saw campervans overturned by gale-force winds.
For Keder Greenhouse customers, one remarkable story stood out in 2024
A flying water tank (yes, flying) was swept across the bay on the Isle of Islay last year, smashing through a stone wall and fence - only to come to rest unbelievably on a Keder Greenhouse. The result? Not a scratch.
No broken panels. No buckled frames. Just one very surprised greenhouse owner.

Not All Greenhouses Are Created Equal
This isn’t luck - it’s engineering. A Keder Greenhouse is designed to withstand the harshest of weather, with a robust ZN35 high tensile steel frame and unique cladding developed in Germany. The cladding isn’t just strong - it also provides perfectly diffused light, creating the ideal environment for growing healthy crops.
We’ve heard it all before: “A Keder Greenhouse is more expensive than a polytunnel.” And we agree - it is! But you’re not just paying for a structure. You’re investing in peace of mind, performance, and longevity. This is a greenhouse that doesn’t just survive storms - it thrives through them.
In fact, some of our original builds from 1990 are still standing strong, over 30 years later. Not many growing structures can say that.
Thinking of Giving Up? Don’t.
If you’ve just watched your old greenhouse crumple in the wind and you're questioning whether it's worth rebuilding - we're here to say: don’t give up.
There is a better way
We understand that many gardeners are trying to avoid plastic. However, not all plastic is created equal. Our cladding isn’t throwaway - it lasts for decades, significantly outliving many alternative materials, and far outperforming glass in both winter and summer.
A Greenhouse Like No Other
Keder Greenhouses aren’t polytunnels, and they’re certainly not glasshouses. They’re a unique, proven system, trusted by commercial growers, smallholders, and domestic gardeners across the UK and beyond.
So, whether you're growing for self-sufficiency, for business, or just for the love of it - you deserve a growing space that won’t let you down when the weather turns.
Come See for Yourself
We’d love to chat - no pressure, no hard sell. Just give us a call at the Keder office (Monday to Friday) on 01386 49094 and speak with Cathy or Electra about your needs - whether it’s a compact domestic greenhouse, a smallholder unit with integrated guttering and drop sides, or a full-scale commercial build.
Or better yet, visit our site in Offenham, just east of Evesham, Worcestershire, WR11 8RZ and see our full range in person - including one of our very first greenhouses, still standing since 1990.
Because storms will come. The question is: will your greenhouse still be standing after they pass?
