As Storm Floris sweeps across the UK with unseasonably strong winds, both Amber and Yellow National Severe Weather Warnings are now in place, bringing potential disruption and danger, especially to northern parts of the country.

🔶 Amber Wind Warning

An Amber wind warning is in effect until 11:00pm Monday, covering much of Scotland, including Orkney. Gusts of 50-70mph are likely widely, with coastal and exposed areas seeing more than 80mph.

🟡 Yellow Wind Warning

A Yellow warning also covers northern England, north Wales, Northern Ireland, and parts of Scotland, where gusts of 40-60mph are expected inland and higher in exposed areas. For the Northern Isles, this warning extends through to 8:00am Tuesday.

🌧️ Wind, Rain & Travel Disruption

While winds are the main concern, rainfall of 20–60mm is also expected across northern and western Scotland, especially over hills and mountains. This could lead to additional disruption across:

  • Roads and bridges (especially dangerous for high-sided vehicles)

  • Rail, ferry and air travel (delays and cancellations likely)

Keep up to date with Traffic Scotland and transport providers before travelling.

🛡️ General Safety Tips

  • Stay indoors if you’re within the Amber warning area.

  • Secure or store loose garden items such as:

    • Bins

    • Plant pots

    • Garden furniture

    • Trampolines (turn upside down or stake down)

    • Greenhouse accessories (tools, covers, etc.)

💨 What This Means for Keder Greenhouse Owners

We’ve been receiving numerous calls and messages from concerned customers about protecting their Keder Greenhouses during this rare August storm. Here’s our official guidance:

✅ Domestic Keder Greenhouses:

  • Auto roof vents:

🔒 Close, lock, and remove the end pin from the vent mechanism.

This will stop wind damage by preventing unnecessary movement and strain.

Smallholder Keder Greenhouses:

  • Side vents:

⬆️ Raise and close fully until the storm passes.

🔧 If your vent is automated, switch it to manual and close it.

✔️ The vertical bars are designed to protect the vent in high winds.

📅 Storm Floris: A Rare Summer Storm

This is only the second time since 2011 that an Amber wind warning has been issued in August. Gusts today may break August wind records in parts of Scotland. It’s also the sixth named storm of the 2024-2025 storm season, with more unsettled weather expected later this week.
