Storm Tested Greenhouse

Storm tested greenhouse on the Isle of Islay

During one of the powerful 2025 storms on the Isle of Islay, a large water tank was torn from its frame by fierce winds. As it was swept across the bay, it smashed through a stone wall, flattening it, then crashed into a fence before finally coming to rest against a Keder Greenhouse.

Despite the incredible force of the impact, the greenhouse absorbed the blow, flexed with the movement — and then bounced right back.

When the owner discovered the enormous water tank sitting in her garden, she was astonished. Even more remarkable was that her Keder Greenhouse stood completely unscathed — not a single scratch from the collision.

A true testament to the strength and resilience of Keder Greenhouses.

Snow Load Testing

Keder cladding is engineered for strength and durability, capable of withstanding extreme weather conditions including high winds and heavy snowfall. A real-world snow load test was conducted in Amherst, New Hampshire, USA, in February 2012 to demonstrate its performance.

Test Conditions:

  • A 2m x 2m sheet of LP-Keder was tested.

  • Two sides were secured using the LP-Keder-Lock Profile (PVC).

  • The remaining sides used a tongue-and-groove system with Cambia battens.

  • Snow weight was measured (5 US gallons = 20.5 lbs).

  • A pyramid shape was used to simulate snow accumulation for load estimation.

Results:
Using standard U.S. CE (Certified Engineer) calculations:

  • Snow volume: 4.47 m³

  • Snow density: 492 kg/m³

  • Total snow weight: 2,199.24 kg (4,848.50 lbs / 2.199 tonnes)

These results confirm the structural integrity of Keder cladding under substantial snow load.

Light Diffusion

Keder cladding offers advanced light management through its unique multi-layered bubble design. Each square foot contains over 100 sealed air bubbles that scatter up to 83% of incoming light - including 30% beneficial infrared light.

This even light diffusion eliminates hot spots and shaded zones, creating a uniform growing environment that supports healthy plant development.

Additionally, Keder’s design helps moderate internal temperatures - reducing heat during the day while retaining warmth at night - and its insulating properties help minimise condensation.

Lower Heating Costs

The built-in layer of sealed air within Keder sheeting provides exceptional insulation and thermal retention. When compared to traditional glasshouses, Keder-clad structures can reduce heating costs by up to 50%, making them a more energy-efficient and cost-effective solution for year-round greenhouse growing.

Which is why Keder is the experts choice
