Here are six simple hacks to try in your Keder greenhouse or garden:

1. Thermal Insulation for Faster Seed Germination

Early seedlings need warmth to sprout. Before sowing your seeds, place two or three loosely crumpled balls of aluminium foil - or a flat sheet - underneath the soil. This reflects light back into the soil and helps retain heat, creating a cozy environment that encourages quicker germination.

2. DIY Light Booster for Seedlings

If your seedlings aren’t getting enough light, try this easy trick - Line the inside of a cardboard box with aluminium foil, shiny side out. Let the foil extend about 5 cm over the edges of the box and place your seedling pots inside. The foil reflects sunlight onto the plants, ensuring even growth and reducing legginess. Just remember to add a few drainage holes at the bottom!

3. Protect Stems and Tree Trunks from Pests

Aluminium foil can act as a physical barrier against garden invaders. Wrap it around the base of your vegetable plants or tree trunks to:

  • Keep snails and slugs from climbing up.

  • Prevent rodents from chewing on tender bark and shoots.

  • Deter grazing animals like goats - just wrap the foil at least 50 cm high to block access.

4. Scare Off Birds and Small Animals

Cut long, narrow strips of foil and hang them from tree branches or trellises near your crops. The movement and shine of the foil create a visual and auditory deterrent that keeps birds, deer, and small mammals at bay - without using harmful chemicals or netting.

5. Keep Foil Secure in the Wind

Worried the wind might whisk your foil away? Use small rocks or soil to anchor foil at the base of your plants, especially when wrapping trunks or laying foil flat across garden beds. A simple step that saves you from chasing runaway foil!

6. Deer-Proof Young Trees

Deer often rubs or nibble the bark of young trees, especially in winter. To prevent damage, wrap a wide strip of aluminium foil around the trunk - again, aim for a height of at least 50 cm. The shiny surface confuses and discourages deer from getting too close.

Final Thoughts

These aluminium foil hacks are simple, affordable, and sustainable - perfect for eco-conscious gardeners.

Whether you’re nurturing tender seedlings or protecting your harvest from curious animals, a roll of foil might just be your garden’s new best friend.
