About the Winning Gardening Team

The students at Palmerston School, aged between 14–16 years of age, all have learning difficulties from severe and profound to some with challenging behaviour. Involvement in the RHS School Gardening Competition has allowed the students to learn how to work efficiently as a team, experience hands-on learning and make a contribution to an enjoyable garden project, no matter how small.

Whilst also learning how to safely work together in the garden, based on their range of different needs and ability levels, students have followed instructions using speaking and listening skills, which may involve sign language, symbols and/or communication skills.

The Judges Comments

The judges of the gardening completion claimed that “The Palmerston School Gardening project is truly inclusive and benefits everyone involved. As judges, we were highly impressed by the exceptional teamwork displayed by Palmerston students, working to each person’s individual strengths.”

A New School Greenhouse For Competition Winners

As part of the application, students were required to create a short video demonstrating their love of gardening. The teamwork that has been demonstrated by the pupils in their video was truly exceptional. The work that was carried out and the level of co-operation showed that horticulture and gardening and gave them all a huge sense of pride and satisfaction. Please take a look at the video below.

Following their competition win, we will be installing a new Keder School Greenhouse during January–February, for the students to continue their gardening progress. We hope they will enjoy many more hours of all-year-round growing, developing their horticultural enthusiasm and enjoyment of the outdoors.
