Moulton College in Northamptonshire added to its world-class facilities by taking delivery of a new Keder Greenhouse in 2010. Since then, the horticultural staff and students have been delighted with the versatility of the structure. They are also appreciating and making good use of the much-needed extra teaching space.
Holding a Beacon of Excellence and officially rated as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, the College teaches at Further and Higher Education levels. More than 100 students are enrolled on the Horticulture courses. Moulton College also runs courses for young adults with learning difficulties, and finds that horticulture in particular is very effective in improving social skills, building confidence and interaction.
The Keder Greenhouse replaced two smaller timber-framed glasshouses. The College wanted to invest in a more modern and permanent facility for both growing (production) and an improved teaching environment. The windproof structure allows additional light in, and provides plenty of working headroom. Stock for the gardens, as well as a variety of shrubs and perennials for the College grounds are all grown within the greenhouse.
Lee Sanders, Horticulture Tutor, explains the benefits: “The Keder greenhouse has definitely helped us to increase production, and given us an improved teaching environment. It is a fantastic teaching resource. We deliver Taster Days and mini courses for local schools and we are able to teach propagation, nursery work and grounds and bed maintenance within the comfortable and practical working space. The Keder greenhouse protects students from the elements – it doesn’t get too hot which means we can work longer. The area is split in two with work benches and seats, as well as shelving so it is very useful.”
The College was impressed with the service received from Keder, particularly as Keder completed delivery and installation very quickly. Both staff and students are thoroughly enjoying the many benefits of their contemporary and adaptable working environment.
